Abstract
A new mechanism for supporting isochronous and asynchronous traffic on ATM networks is proposed. Based on this architecture, the problem of allocating isochronous bandwidth is investigated. Two efficient isochronous paths selection algorithms based on the concept of paths merging and splitting are also proposed for this problem. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by simulation. Simulation results show that for a limited isochronous bandwidth, the performance of the proposed algorithms are much better than that of the traditional isochronous channels allocation scheme in terms of isochronous cells utilization, call blocking rate, and the number of successfully established isochronous paths
