Abstract
The authors propose a digital phase-locked loop (DPLL) based on stochastic approximation for burst mode synchronization. This loop contains a time-decreasing gain term and provides rapid acquisition and significant noise immunity. An acquisition analysis is presented and shows that the modified loop greatly improves the acquisition performance. The reason that the modified loop performs so well is that the time-varying gain eliminates the hangup anomaly in the DPLL. Architectures are proposed for both a known start of burst and a start of burst with some associated randomness. The performance of these architectures is partially analyzed
