Abstract :
An automatic gauge control (AGC) system that calculates the thickness of a strip, as it leaves the roll gap, from its entry speed, exit speed, and entry thickness is presented. The calculation is based on the constant volume flow (CVF) equation applied to the roll gap, so that the outgoing thickness can be calculated if the incoming thickness is known. The calculated thickness in the roll gap is used as feedback in a closed loop system controlling the roll gap, so that the desired strip thickness is obtained. The CVF AGC system is guaranteed to produce certain tolerances on cold rolled strip having an incoming variation not exceeding 5% of nominal strip thickness.<>
