  • Abstract
Based on the findings of an energy audit, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston applied for and received funds to implement several energy conservation retrofit measures. The original scope of work for this retrofit called for the installating reflectors in all four-lamp fixtures, cleaning the diffusers, installing two 34 W energy saving lamps, and disconnecting the unused ballast. The actual retrofit was substantially changed, from the recommended use of specular reflectors to the use of high-lumen-output lamps and hybrid electronic ballasts. Randomly selected areas, representing a cross section of the building occupants needs and requirements, were retrofitted. Foot candle readings were recorded before and after to ascertain if the new lighting scheme meet the illumination levels suggested by the Illuminating Engineering Society Handbook, 5th Edition. All tests proved not only that these levels were being attained, but also that a marked increase in foot candle readings was being recorded. Economic analysis data are included
