  • Abstract
This paper describes the application of real-time simulation tools and how automation techniques can be used during the development process of modern automotive electronic control units (ECUs) in order to effectively meet the demands placed by the increasing complexity of the software and the resulting intricate ECU tests. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation along with test automation is increasingly important for the efficient integration of production type engine ECUs. With more and more manufacturers relying on independent suppliers, the need for automatically testing black box systems, including closed-loop and open-loop functions, self-diagnoses, failure memory management and the triggering of failure lamps, becomes paramount
