Abstract
Software technologies to implement distributed multimedia services currently require intensive network and computing resources. In many environments, the design of these services on top of a general-purpose middleware layer is the usual choice. CORBA, Java RMI and .NET are major representatives of this approach. This paper describes and compares the three aforementioned middleware alternatives by evaluating the performance of the implementation of A/V Streaming services on top. From this comparison, several key points and implementation details are highlighted.
