Abstract
A method of introducing a poloidal magnetic field into the MAGO chamber for the plasma magnetic insulation from the walls of an MHD nozzle is offered. A poloidal field is created by a spiral reeled up on a thin cylindrical chamber wall and is introduced through it during a characteristic time of /spl sim/10 ms; in doing so a field penetrates into the internal copper electrode to a depth of /spl sim/1 cm. During the stage of plasma acceleration in the nozzle, taking several microseconds, the poloidal field becomes frozen in the metal and is pushed aside by plasma against the walls forming peculiar insulation layers.
