Abstract
It has been reported that the transient power dip, say 10~40% power down for a duration of 60~200 millisecond has caused serious damage to high power electric drives such as cranes operated in the Port of Singapore Authority. This paper presents a feasibility study of a capacitor energy powered voltage booster for crane operations in the case of transient power dip. The voltage booster consists of a monitor unit which is used to detect power dip and a Cuk converter. A charged capacitor is used as the input DC source of the converter. PSPICE is used to investigate various different operation conditions. A laboratory based prototype is constructed and tested. The experimental results are compared with the simulated ones
