Abstract
This paper introduces a quadrature intermediate frequency modulator implemented digitally by two digital sigma delta modulators (DSDMs). The output bit streams from in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) modulators are combined by a multiplexer similar to the Gilbert-cell structure. This novel structure can realize two-step-up transmitter without using costly multipliers and multi-bit digital-to-analog converters that are required in the conventional structure.
