Abstract
A comparative study was carried out of ZnS(O,OH) thin films deposited from chemical bath containing thiourea, zinc acetate, ammonia and sodium citrate, and ZnS films prepared by co-evaporation of Zn and elemental sulphur. ZnS is an environmentally friendly material with a wide band gap (Eg =3.7 eV) compared to CdS (2.4 eV), which is conventionally used as buffer layer in chalcopyrite based solar cells. Suitable conditions for reproducible deposition of good quality ZnS(O,OH) and ZnS thin films have been determined. The samples were investigated by UV-VIS spectrophotometry, X-ray diffraction and AFM microscopy. The effects of growth method and synthesis parameters on optical, structural and morphological properties of the ZnS thin films have been studied.
