Abstract
Channel provisioning in four-fiber wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) rings is studied for realistic telecom-operator traffic. For static traffic, wavelength conversion is of no benefit. For dynamic traffic, especially with churn, 1+1 protected WDM rings may, surprisingly offer higher capacities. For both cases we present the most suitable wavelength assignment algorithms.
