Abstract
Summary form only given. In my tutorial, I will review what micromachines are, how they are built, and why they will be important to lightwave networks. I will then review work in this area and show examples of modulators, attenuators, switches, active equalizers, add/ drop multiplexers, optical monitors, optical crossconnects, and active component packages that will provide highly functional, low-cost solutions to problems facing the network designers of the future.
