Abstract :
The authors present a taxonomy of the approaches adopted so far, i.e., up to January 1991, for large (an area covered by a ⩾100-km-diameter circle) supra-high-speed packet switching network. A survey of the unclassified literature makes it possible to classify them into two major groups: (i) the direct or unilevel design method, and (ii) the indirect or multilevel or hierarchical design approach. Numerous examples from each category are provided
