  • Abstract
Applications of large horsepower single-phase written-poleTM motors are discussed. Much of the electrical distribution in the world is single-phase. The written-pole motor has very low starting current, and runs at very high efficiency at synchronous speed and unity power factor. These characteristics make the motors ideal candidates for operating at high horsepower (over 100 HP) in single-phase applications. They can be used to replace internal combustion engines in proper niches-reducing costs for irrigation and improving reliability. The paper also presents test data obtained in the development laboratory, as well as in the field
