Abstract
We have proposed a regional personal-computer (PC) communication network system and examined its realization on STM networks. The system provides group communication services that guarantee communication security among the registered users. This paper describes research on the ATM-based system configurations which can provide the new additional service of “group resource sharing” to users. Sufficient network resources are provided to group members while the network resource is shared by all users. The system configuration that implements the function of group resource sharing using hierarchical round-robin control is presented. Two types of system models for group communication are studied; (1) MAC: MAC-layer Ethernet packets are transmitted over ATM cells with permanent VP assignment, and (2) LANE: Ethernet packets are transmitted by LAN Emulation system having the new group management function. A comparative study shows the latter is promising by adopting a broadcast to members
