Abstract :
This paper addresses the issue of network resilience for the SuperPON system being developed within ACTS-PLANET (Photonic Local Access Network). From extensive reliability data the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based PLANET SuperPON architecture is evaluated in terms of availability, in relation to the requirements for various services. It is concluded that a moderate amount of redundancy is necessary to provide the requisite level of resilience for the PLANET SuperPON to support telephony as well as the wider broadband service basket. It is seen that cable cut is a dominant factor. The telephony availability requirement can be achieved for the fibre to the home (FTTH) scenario with redundancy most importantly in the first distribution section and in the amplified splitter, whilst for the fibre to the curb (FTTC) scenario it may be necessary to implement additional redundancy
