Abstract
This paper centers on the use of GOOSE (generic object oriented substation event) to provide the messaging means to perform protection and control functions via a local area network (LAN) within the substation through the use of IEDs (intelligent electronic devices). It is explained that GOOSE is not used for data retrieval such as settings, oscillography, or metering and that a full description may be found in the GOMSFE (Generic Object Models for Substation and Feeder Equipment) documentation
