Abstract :
The subway system of West Berlin´s public transport company BVG will be equipped with a battery of about 1 MWh. The system layout was supported by comprehensive measurements and computer simulations. The battery will be connected to the DC power network by a resistor with two antiparallel valves. This configuration should enable optimal energy management between the battery and the DC network. The purpose of the battery is to equalize the load curve, store the recovered brake energy, and provide a short-time emergency power supply. The equalization of the load curve results in reductions of power charges and of rectifier size. Additionally, up to 35% of the acceleration energy can be recuperated. The system description and design are given
