Abstract :
A feedback system for control of end tidal percent CO/sub 2/ in a patient subjected to mechanical ventilation is described. It is based on a mathematical model of the respiratory function. It includes a capnometer and a mechanical ventilator connected by a digital computer programmed as a nonlinear controller. The system was tested open-chain: the computer suggested the best ventilation pattern to be filled to the automatic ventilator. The preliminary clinical trial gave good results. The system offers flexibility and low cost.<>
