Abstract :
A monolithic operational amplifier has been realised, which has a unity-gain frequency of 1 GHz. The amplifier is fully compensated for unity-gain feedback, having a phase margin of 60° at 1 GHz. This high bandwidth is the result of an all-NPN signal path. A three-stage configuration reaches a DC-gain of 74 dB in a 50 Ω load, while an efficient frequency compensation technique, the multipath nested Miller compensation preserves the bandwidth. Because of the high bandwidth, the noise is kept as low-as 1.2 nV/√Hz. Finally, the influence of the packaging has been taken into account and a good bonding scheme has been selected, allowing off-chip use of the full bandwidth. The chip was realised in the 10 GHz fT bipolar part of a BiCMOS process
