Abstract
This paper proposes a new principle of variable frequency for AC-AC conversion, which operates below the half-frequencies of electric network like traditional cycloconverters, but very different from it in scheme. The new variable frequency principle is described by means of a well-known concept of amplitude modulation from microelectronics, and the waveform control mode adopts chopper scheme. Experiments show the new conversion principle making progress than traditional cycloconverters in high power factor, less power device number and simple control, so getting same or better performances at low cost. The application prospect of the new principle is also described particularly for buffering energy shortage problem.
