Abstract :
The author briefly summarises the modus operandi of traditional cable systems and then compares them with extruded insulation cable systems. The traditional cables discussed include paper impregnated cables and pressurised cables. The author then discusses the advantages of extruded insulated cables of the traditional designs. The main advantage is the elimination of hydraulic systems. The failure mechanism of extruded insulated cables, due to electrical discharge activity, is also discussed
