Abstract
In this brief commentary, Martin Campbell-Kelly explores an ongoing discussion regarding breadth versus depth in the history of computing specifically and the history of science more generally. Campbell-Kelly describes an exchange on the topic with Donald Knuth and weighs both sides of what he refers to as an "internalist-externalist debate".
