Abstract
Distributed computing has emerged as a promising solution to the inherent drawbacks of monolithic (stand-alone) computing. Common object request broker architecture (CORBA) has become a de facto in developing distributed applications due to its standardized architecture, and easy interoperability among distributed components managed by an object request broker (ORB). This paper describes how CORBA standard was successfully used in developing a distributed stock exchange application, a typical three tiers (clients, brokers, stock exchange) application that has many distributed components and a high database hit rate. The Kuala Lumpur stock exchange (KLSE) was taken as a model of study in developing this application. CORBA event service was heavily used to cater for the communication needs of this application. Unified modeling language (UML) was used to develop the analysis and design deliverables of the application while VisiBroker and Java were respectively the ORB and programming language used to implement the interface definition language (IDL) files developed.
