Abstract
Preliminary results of tests using avalanche photodiodes operated in the Geiger mode are presented. Light yields and attenuation lengths of plastic scintillating fibers of diameters 0.875 mm phi and 2 mm phi were measured with the avalanche photodiodes. The detection efficiency of the 1.5 mm phi fiber for ionizing particles is estimated based on these results.<>
