Abstract
This paper presents a discrete time optimal control formulation for the freeway ramp metering problem and a computationally efficient procedure to solve it. The problem has a special structure: its control constraints can be reduced to box constraints through a variable transformation. This transformed problem is solved using a modified quasi-Newton method, which is shown to be superior to the conjugate gradient method in cases where traffic dynamics is more complicated
