Abstract :
A broadband ISDN system concept is described that is based on an extension of existing ISDN principles and standards. The system provides the subscriber not only with the B-ISDN communicative services (up to 140 Mb/s), but also with the distributive service (cable TV), providing four simultaneous video channels. The principal system elements (exchange, subscriber line, customer premises network, and terminals) are discussed and the methods required for the economic introduction of broadband communication are mentioned. A brief report is included on the BERKOM (Berliner Kommunikations system) test network, which has been in operation since the beginning of 1988
