Abstract
This tutorial reviews the basic concepts and the progress in the field of visible and infrared image sensors. The topics to be reviewed include: photodetectors and readout structures, architectures for line and area sensing arrays, structures and techniques for controlling blooming and smear, noise sources and tile figures of merit for visible and infrared imagers. This presentation will also be complemented by an overview and illustrations of the state-of-the-art of visible and infrared image sensors with a major emphasis on silicon VLSI sensors for HDTV and infrared imaging with Schottky-barrier detectors. The performance of the visible and infrared imagesensors will also be illustrated with a video tape presentation.
