Summary form only given. In order to supplement reducing state funding, there is an increasing trend in UK universities towards the active exploitation of their intellectual property. Implementation of this objective has meant the development of supporting infrastructure including wholly owned trading companies, science parks and venture funds, some of which are substantial. This talk looks at current practice in this field using a number of current examples from around the country
