Abstract :
In recent studies, we carried out ultrasonic multiple spot joining of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE; Teflon) sheets of 0.1-0.8 mm thicknesses using a 320 kHz longitudinal-mode transducer with a joining tool 2.2 mm in diameter, and a 50 kHz flexural-mode transducer with a joining tool 5 mm in diameter. However, the joining spots are very small to apply for a large joining area. Therefore, we attempted to join PTFE sheets using the lateral face of a longitudinally vibrated rod for one-shot seam joining. The lateral face can rub the PTFE face strongly. As the first step, we joined two PTFE sheets of 0.3-0.8 mm thicknesses using a 19 kHz longitudinal-mode joining system having 10 mm×80 mm joining area with a half wave length straight bar. The joining is carried out in a few seconds. The maximum joint strength is 2.4 MPa under the conditions that thickness of the sheet is 0.5 mm, static pressure is 6 MPa and joining time is 10 s
