Abstract :
Urban traffic congestion, inefficient use of energy and excessive emissions are replacing high socio-economic costs on an urban population. The advances made in the intelligent vehicle highway system (IVHS) technologies have increased the success potential of countermeasures. The traffic congestion, energy and environmental problems are introduced. A description of the relevant IVHS technologies is given. The use of IVHS technologies to improvements is described. Examples are drawn from North American as well as advanced Asian cities. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.
