Abstract :
We present a method to calculate the diffraction efficiency of a two dimensional photonic crystal (2D PC) surface structure for light emitting diodes. To give appropriate results not only the diffraction properties of the 2D PC is taken into account, but also the mode structure of the light emitting diode. The method is sufficiently general that any 2D PC with arbitrary hole depth and filling factor can be studied
