Abstract
The role of monitoring in anesthesia is to provide to the anesthetist with accurate and reliable information about the state of the patient and the anesthesia delivery system upon which clinical decisions can be based. The proliferation of monitoring devices has created new problems and the need for a more coordinated, integrated approach to the development of anesthesia monitoring systems. A discussion is presented of the principles of this approach, which included physical integration, functional integration, and the application of ergonomics and human factors methodologies.<>
