Abstract
A discrete system, e.g. a digital filter, is mostly described by the system transfer function or the impulse response. The fixed-point digital signal processors have been designed to maximize throughput in data-intensive DSP applications. The optimal implementation of a linear time-invariant (LTI) discrete system depends on the choice of the realization structure. A new method of comparing the implementation properties of the various IIR digital filter structures is introduced. These IIR digital filters have the same system transfer function and their optimal structure is chosen according to their transient response
