Abstract
We review the work done to revise the actual design of the network topology which exists in the Spanish University for Distance Education (UNED), trying to improve and optimize the communication links used in this MAN/WAN environment, to allow the perfect and synchronized operation of the applications and people involved in the second largest University in Spain. The work was done in two different phases: in the first one we have identified the actual topology and profile of the UNED, to simulate and optimize its operation, and to try to better distribute the communication channels and links used to establish all the connections. The second phase of the work was done using a simulation of the identified topology and changing the parameters and traffic of this to optimize the performance and service required
