Abstract :
This paper is a preliminary examination of technology requirements for multiwavelength networks. A key element of these networks will be the WDM router, also known as a wavelength cross-connect. This paper estimates the size of the WDM router required for inter-exchange carrier (IEC) applications. The analysis presented in this paper is based on actual traffic data for a large North American IEC. Four wavelengths per fiber and 10 Gbit/s per wavelength are assumed
