Abstract
Internet engineering task force (IETF) has proposed hierarchical mobile IPv6 (HMIPv6) in order to reduce a frequent location registration of a mobile node in mobile IPv6 (MIPv6). HMIPv6 reduces the amount of signaling and improves the performance of MIPv6 in terms of handover latency. However, less comparative studies have been done to study the performance of the hierarchical Mobile IPv6 protocol. In this paper, we propose an evaluation model containing four access routers and up to 50 mobile nodes that move randomly and communicate. The proposed network model is then simulated in an open source simulator NS-2. The study provides quantitative results of the improvements provided by HMIPv6 with respect to handoff latency, packet loss, signaling load and bandwidth per station.
