Abstract
Optical communications has enjoyed explosive growth in terms of technical achievement as well as commercial implementation. This paper will contain three main sections. Firstly, a broad perspective will be given on some of the future trends in optical communication systems. Secondly, technical issues will be described that relate to stable, robust optical networking, including performance monitoring, channel-degrading effects, and switching. Finally, adding flexibility and reconfigurability to different aspects of the base optical technologies will be discussed.
