Abstract
The energy efficiency of future wireless networks is an important area of study to reduce network costs, carbon emissions and to improve future network sustainability. The Mobile VCE Green Radio Industry-Academic Project has studied a number of techniques and concepts for energy saving in wireless networks. This paper is three fold: first, we present some of the key research advances on energy-efficiency techniques and architectures. Secondly, we address the major challenge to understand how to combine energy savings of most promising techniques. Finally, we discuss integration solutions within the project to determine the overall energy savings in conventional macro-cell only networks and future heterogeneous networks. The results of this analysis will be described and discussed.
