Abstract :
The forced oscillation technique was applied to patients with varying stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A five-element parallel compartment model was used to describe the impedance of the respiratory system using an iterative parameter estimation routine. A direct relationship between the severity of COPD and two of the model parameters-namely the peripheral resistance and lumped lung and chestwall compliance-was demonstrated.<>
