Abstract
In solving an engineering problem by an optimization technique, designers are required to choose an appropriate structural model since conventional optimization techniques, including standard genetic algorithms, do not possess structural model selection ability. To achieve more efficient design, we propose a genetic algorithm with a model structure selection ability. The proposed algorithm utilizes individuals that have redundant chromosomes. The ability of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by using a simple multiobjective problem. An application to control systems design is discussed. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can effectively be used for a design based on the method of inequalities and the principle of matching
