Abstract
The characteristics of the negative corona inception are discussed. A simplified statistical model applied to calculate the distribution of inception voltage in divergent fields is adjusted to a 1 m airgap with convergent field. The influence of the air humidity, ion density, electrode material and surface roughness are examined. An interpretation of the corona inception in convergent fields, based on the presence of negative ions and surface protrusions, is proposed
