Abstract :
As an important index of highway design, At-grade intersection spacing effects operation efficiency and traffic safety of the link. By analyzing the traffic characteristics of the link between two signalized intersections, an analysis method for signalized intersection safety spacing is presented, which is based on the traffic stability distance. Accordingly, a safety spacing of signalized intersection could be established based on the traffic stability distance and the up-stream functional area length of intersection. Based on the results of field survey and VISSIM simulation, the CV (coefficient of variance) value is consistent with the traffic conflict distribution on the link, so it could be used as indirect safety evaluation index and also to determine the stability distance of traffic flow, then the stability distance is calculated based on speed dispersion theory; Finally, combining the up-stream functional area length of intersection, the minimum safety spacing criteria of signalized intersections is established for arterial highway.
