Verification and development of network technology on Okinawa regional Internet eXchange (OIX)

This paper gives an outline of the project of Okinawa regional Internet eXchange (OIX) which started in Okinawa, Japan and all kinds of related research and development subjects that have been studied in OIX. Owing both to its geographical factor and political factor, Okinawa is a unique prefecture in Japan. The Japanese government therefore is carrying out a policy different from other prefectures. In recent years, “The Multi-media Island Plan” was set forth by the Okinawa government as part of its policy, as well as the necessity of regional Internet infrastructure available for high speed communication. Under these circumstances, OIX, one of the model cases of regional Internet infrastructure, has drawn considerable attention.
