Abstract
One of the ABET 2000 desired attributes of engineering graduates is "a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning". This paper discusses some ways this attribute can be developed. The strategy being adopted is founded on several basic elements, including: (1) communicating expectations; (2) expecting students to take responsibility for their learning while at the university; (3) providing learning opportunities outside the classroom; (4) providing motivation for students; and (5) teaching students how to learn.
