Abstract
This paper describes a theory of surface Love waves propagating in a lossy viscoelastic layer deposited on an elastic substrate. An assumption of low losses, i.e., ωη44/μB0 ≪1, has been applied. The complex dispersion equation of Love waves was expanded into a Taylor series and terms of order higher than a quadratic one were omitted. Consequently, the attenuation coefficient and the change of phase velocity of the Love wave caused by losses in the surface layer were calculated. The results of the investigations can be applied in non-destructive testing (NDT) for determining the rheological parameters of viscoelastic materials
