Abstract :
In this paper, we propose to use high altitude platforms (HAPs) for providing wireless broadband communication services in suburban and rural areas, which usually require a cost-effective and economical delivery of telecommunication services. Architectures for HAP communication systems are discussed in terms of service applications and cooperation with terrestrial and satellite systems. WiMax broadband services from HAPs with a multiple antenna payload are examined in a proposed application scenario in order to show the effectiveness of HAP system. Finally, we propose a partnership-based business model for specific HAP applications in suburban and rural areas. Key factors of successfully delivering the HAP services in the business model are investigated in terms of its coexistence capability with major broadband and mobile wireless network operators.
