Abstract
The 16th December 1939 is an important date in South Africa´s technical history. It is the date when a small team of scientists and engineers switched on the first experimental radar set which they had designed and built. The tests were successful. This achievement is looked at against a background of limited supply of suitable components to be used in new technology. What is more, with the war already in progress in Europe, it had to be carried out under a veil of secrecy. The experimental radar was code-named the JB which is a shortened form of the word Johannesburg. The JB set operated at a frequency of 90 MHz
