  • Abstract
Ground penetrating radar is an important archaeological tool. The EM waves can´t reach deep into the underground in the Yangtz lower reaches because it is absorbed by groundwater and soil moisture. This results in a smaller penetration depth and less precision for the back wave´s shorter amplitude and lower S/N rate. The stratum is a kind of chromatic dispersion media and the radar back wave impulse becomes broader after it traverses the stratum. The back wave can´t be identified correctly, and the precise position can´t be stated, which makes it difficult to define the object´s exact location and profile in the latter data processing and image rebuilding process. This article presents a new method which is encoded by both impulse signal and FMCW radar signal to positioning the underground ancient relics especially the vault tombs under the special geographic conditions like the Yangtz river. It increases the signal´s S/N rate by the vertical time related technology to enhance the vertical precision. The profile of the underground tombs is deduced by the way of back wave energy. The wave-transmitting antenna is put at different places and the reflection character parameters ofthe object are processed in a collective grouping way. With the help of image processing the underground relics are reverse-deducted in 3D
