Abstract
High penetration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution networks makes the islanding operation more realistic. Due to environmental concerns and fuel prices, the use of renewable energies, particularly wind energy, is becoming a popular choice. In this paper, a new algorithm using Monte Carlo technique and adaptive load shedding for assessing the reliability of wind-diesel systems in islanding mode of operation is proposed. Weibull distribution and maximum likelihood estimation have been implemented to simulate the wind speed. Then, reliability indices for two strategies, in one of which islanding operation is allowed and in the other one is not, have been compared. Islanding indices have also been calculated when islanding operation is allowed. Finally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate the effects of wind and diesel capacity and the maximum wind to load penetration on the reliability and the economic indices.
